Mention rowing to most people and they think of the Oxford/Cambridge boat race, or boats on Danson Lake, of upper-class types at Henley, or kids fooling around in pedalos.

Few realise that there is a tremendous history of ordinary people earning their living on the River Thames and relaxing by racing each other in their working boats along Greenwich Reach. In fact, the oldest regatta in the country is Greenwich Regatta, established in 1787. Globe Rowing Club, founded in 1923 is in many respects heir to that tradition and is one of the last clubs active on the lower reaches on the Thames.

The Club goes out on the River every weekend, and during the week the main Club evening is Wednesday. Beginners sessions take place on Monday. Crews training for races will be on the water perhaps five or six days per week during the Summer, but our recreational rowers are generally satisfied with a trip either to Tower Bridge (far left, picture below) or Thames Barrier ( far right, picture below) on Sundays. During the Winter, the Club evenings are used for land training, or equipment maintenance (or just for a drink at the Bar!). Subscriptions are modest, given the cost of the equipment:
