Cooperation and "Clubmanship"

The club depends on the goodwill of experienced members to coach novices and make up crews for them to learn in. If you are promised an outing at a specific time, please be there in good time to change and warm up. Remember that one person's unannounced failure to turn up usually leaves at least three people standing around getting irritated. Whilst learning, you will probably be asked to help out by coxing crews: this is an excellent way to get river experience, and may be the best way to ensure getting a row later.

Further Progress

The traditional route from absolute beginner to Novice (competitive) rower at Globe includes impromptu challenges between crews, Club Races, and matches with other clubs. The Club Races are generally Summer events, held over a variety of courses, with prizes for the winners. Attendance at these races is compulsory for all members, and supporters are welcome. We are keen to have crews competing against other clubs in the Regattas (side-by-side races) that all clubs put on during the Summer. To reach this level you will need to take the sport fairly seriously and to show sufficient commitment to persuade the Club to devote equipment and coaching resources to your crew.

The Club

The aim of the Club is to ensure that everyone enjoys their rowing at whatever level they wish to reach. To make this happen, we need funds to buy equipment and to keep boathouse and clubhouse going. As a member of the Club you do not have many formal obligations, but we are keen that you join in as many Club activities as possible. This may mean helping to run social or fund-raising events, supporting competitive crews, helping to repair equipment, "persuading" your family and friends to buy tickets for Club Races (or other events), or even cleaning the showers and repainting the changing rooms. Some of these activities can be tedious if only a few join in, so we hope that you will make as great a contribution as you can to the Club's activities outside simply rowing with us.

The Committee

The Club is run by the Captain and its Committee. Visit the Club Committee section of this site to find out more.
